fic commentary: land where i land - rise.
Feb. 16th, 2024 06:00 pmIt was so much fun to play with questions like these. I, the author, know the answers to them, but having both my protagonist and the reader scramble to figure them out in real time made me incredibly happy. "Jihoon hasn’t seen a single deer since they got here a day ago, but he’ll keep looking, keep trying." is one of the lines from the first scene and I think it sets the tone for the rest of the story, as well as "Chan hasn’t told him much and he hasn’t asked. He doesn’t ever ask, he’s realizing more and more, these days", directly after it. Jihoon will keep trying, won't ask. This is the bottom line of the whole story.
I've had people ask me what Jihoon's dreams mean. He says it himself, "Dreams are full of motive." I'm not one who can fully understand their subconscious, and I bet most people can't, either. The only thing I'm sure of is this; Jihoon doesn't know what the dreams mean. Refer back to the previous paragraph - do you think he'll ask either himself or Chan? Does he want to know?
It's only the first chapter and I'm already in so deep. I'm royally fucked. I don't want to leave this goddamn cabin either. Winter itself is such a lonely season - adding the elements of dereality to it, this... this eeriness, Jihoon's constant battle with himself over his desire, whatever supernatural stuff surrounds them... I'm pretty sure I haven't written anything this haunting before. Or, well; nothing I've written has ever haunted me this much before.
Ati, what is up with Chan's backstory? Well. If you truly want spoilers for this, I'm happy to do that over on twitter at scifis. If you feel like you can be a little patient, though... I promise I won't let you down. See you soon. See you in your dreams.
